The essential basil oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flower tips of the basil plant. This greenish-yellow, freshly scented essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to awaken the mind, calm the nerves, and promote clear thinking. Basil originally comes from growing Asia and the Pacific Islands but is now cultivated throughout Europe and the USA.
Basil oil is considered therapeutic for the respiratory tract and is often used for asthma, bronchitis, and sinus infections. It is used to treat nervous disorders as well as stress-related headaches and migraines. It is said to relieve mental exhaustion while providing clarity and mental strength. This oil is said to relieve constipation, discomfort, vomiting, and abdominal cramps and is considered a digestive aid for menstrual complaints. It helps with gout by lowering uric acid levels in the blood. It is helpful for arthritis, refreshes the skin, and heals insect bites. However, experts advise against the use of this oil for pregnant women and children under 16 years of age.
This herb is popular in India and has been used for centuries both for prayer and healing. The leaves of the plant are chewed during prayer ceremonies or soaked in coconut water or holy water and distributed after prayer in temples. They are chewed to relieve sore throat and cough.
