Basil essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tips of the basil plant. This greenish-yellow, fresh-smelling essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to awaken the spirit, calm the nerves, and promote clear thinking. Basil originated in growing regions of Asia and the Pacific Islands, but is now cultivated throughout Europe and the United States.
Basil oil is considered therapeutic for the respiratory system and is commonly used for asthma, bronchitis, and sinusitis. It is used to treat nervous disorders, as well as stress-related headaches and migraines. It is said to relieve mental fatigue while providing clarity and mental strength. This oil is said to relieve constipation, malaise, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, and is considered a bowel for menstrual cramps. It helps with gout by lowering uric acid levels in the blood. It is helpful for arthritis, refreshes the skin, and heals insect bites. However, experts advise against using this oil in pregnant women and children under 16 years of age.
This herb is popular in India and has been used for centuries for both prayer and healing. The plant's leaves are chewed during prayer ceremonies or soaked in coconut or holy water and distributed in temples after prayers. They are chewed to relieve sore throats and coughs. A decoction of tulasi (basil) leaves is drunk to relieve sore throats and breathing difficulties.
