Roman chamomile provides an essential oil that is bright blue when fresh. It can be obtained from the flower and the upper parts of the plant. It has an excellent calming effect and is said to relieve irritations and impatience as well as help with premenstrual syndrome and other menstrual and menopausal complaints. Roman chamomile is an evergreen plant with a fresh apple scent and is mainly cultivated in France, Belgium, and Eastern Europe.

This herb is excellent for skin problems such as acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry/itchy skin, and allergies. It is said to be good for stomach pain, gallbladder problems, and sore throats and helps with allergies, hay fever, and asthma. In diluted form, this oil soothes children with colic, irritability, diarrhea, and teething discomfort. In a vaporizer, it relieves headaches, nervous disorders, and migraines. Although this oil is gentle enough for use on children and babies, you should always consult an expert before use.

The medicinal use of chamomile dates back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The Egyptians dedicated it to the sun god. A papyrus document from 2800 BC records the use of chamomile to treat skin diseases. Chamomile oil was used for embalming corpses. Hippocrates, the great Greek physician, is said to have used chamomile as a herbal remedy. In mythology, chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs that Wodan, the god of the underworld, gave to mortals to improve their lives.
