Roman chamomile produces an essential oil that is light blue when fresh. It can be extracted from the flower and the upper parts of the plant. It has excellent calming properties and is said to relieve irritation and impatience, as well as help with premenstrual syndrome and other menstrual and menopausal symptoms. Roman chamomile is an evergreen plant with a fresh apple scent and is cultivated primarily in France, Belgium, and Eastern Europe.
This herb is excellent for skin problems such as acne, eczema, rashes, wounds, dermatitis, dry/itchy skin, and allergies. It is said to be good for stomach aches, gallbladder problems, and sore throats, and helps with allergies, hay fever, and asthma. Diluted, this oil soothes children with colic, irritability, diarrhea, and teething pain. In a vaporizer, it relieves headaches, nervous disorders, and migraines. Although this oil is gentle enough for use on children and babies, you should always consult a professional before use.
The medicinal use of chamomile dates back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The Egyptians dedicated it to the sun god. A papyrus document from 2800 BC documents the use of chamomile to treat skin diseases. Chamomile oil was used to embalm corpses. Hippocrates, the great Greek physician, is said to have used chamomile as an herbal remedy. In mythology, chamomile is one of the nine sacred herbs given to mortals by Wodan, the god of the underworld, to improve their lives.
