Citronella oil is extracted from the leaves and stems of the plant species Cymbopogon, specifically Cymbopogon nardus, by steam distillation. Citronella essential oil is known as a herbal insect repellent and non-toxic biopesticide and has been approved for this purpose in the United States since 1948. The main producing countries for this oil are Indonesia and China, which together produce approximately 40% of the world's citronella oil.
This oil is not only a useful insect repellent for the skin, but also good for excessive sweating and oily skin and hair, and acts as a deodorant. It is said to relieve pain from rheumatism and arthritis and prevent flu, colds, and minor infections. The oil is good for the digestive system, helping to cure colitis, intestinal infections, and intestinal parasites. It relieves menstrual cramps and pain and accelerates the heartbeat. Used in a vaporizer, it dispels fatigue, headaches, and nervous pain, and promotes a cheerful and optimistic mood. Avoid use during pregnancy and on children under 3 years of age. Do not take internally.
Ancient cultures in India, Egypt, and elsewhere where the grass species Cymbopogon grew used it to repel insects, especially mosquitoes. At that time, people settled near rivers and bodies of water. While this was a good thing in many ways, it also led to an abundance of insects and mosquitoes that spread disease and killed people. Therefore, the use of this grass as a repellent was a matter of life and death at that time.
