Citronella oil is obtained from the leaves and stems of the plant species Cymbopogon, especially Cymbopogon nardus, by steam distillation. Essential Citronella Oil is known as a plant-based insect repellent and non-toxic biopesticide and has been approved in the USA for this purpose since 1948. The main producing countries of this oil are Indonesia and China, which together produce about 40% of the world's citronella oil.

This oil is not only a useful insect repellent for the skin but also effective against excessively sweaty, oily skin and hair and acts as a deodorant. It is said to relieve pain from rheumatism and arthritis and to prevent flu, colds, and mild infections. The oil is good for the digestive system to heal colitis, intestinal infections, and intestinal parasites. It relieves menstrual discomfort and pain and accelerates the heartbeat. Used in a diffuser, it dispels fatigue, headaches, and nerve pain and promotes a cheerful and optimistic mood. Avoid use during pregnancy and in children under 3 years old. Do not ingest internally.

Ancient cultures in India, Egypt, and elsewhere, where the grass species Cymbopogon grew, used it to repel insects, especially mosquitoes. At that time, people settled near rivers and bodies of water. While this was beneficial in many ways, it also led to an abundance of insects and mosquitoes that transmitted diseases and killed people. Therefore, the use of this grass as a repellent was a matter of life and death back then.
