The essential clary sage oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flower tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea. The plant originally comes from Southern Europe and is cultivated in France and Russia for its oil. The greatest advantage of this oil is its calming effect on the nerves and it is especially helpful for women's ailments and complaints. It is also said to help with skin problems such as acne, boils, and ulcers, and to relieve muscle and joint pain.

Clary sage helps with depression, stress, and insomnia. It is used for women's issues such as painful menstruation, irregular periods, and during pregnancy. During menopause, this oil is said to relieve hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, as well as headaches and dizziness. It is used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary sage oil should be avoided when consuming alcohol, as it can enhance the intoxicating effect. Use it in small amounts, as a high dose can cause headaches.

In the Middle Ages, clary sage was known as Oculus Christi, which means "the eye of Christ." Since then, it has been a highly valued remedy. In Jamaica, it was used by the indigenous population to cleanse and cool ulcers as well as for eye inflammations. The expensive oil has long been an important and useful remedy in aromatherapy and natural medicine.
