Clary sage essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the flowering tips and leaves of Salvia sclarea. The plant is native to southern Europe and is cultivated in France and Russia for its oil. The main benefit of this oil is its calming effect on the nerves, making it especially helpful for women's aches and pains. It is also said to help with skin problems such as acne, boils, and ulcers, and to relieve muscle and joint pain.
Clary sage helps with depression, stress, and insomnia. It is used for women's problems such as painful periods, irregular menstruation, and during pregnancy. During menopause, this oil is said to relieve hot flashes, night sweats, heart palpitations, irritability, headaches, and dizziness. It is used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary sage oil should be avoided with alcohol consumption, as it can increase the intoxicating effects. Use in small amounts, as high doses can cause headaches.
In the Middle Ages, clary sage was known as Oculus Christi, meaning "the eye of Christ." Since then, it has been a highly valued medicinal herb. In Jamaica, it was used by the local population to cleanse and cool ulcers, as well as to treat eye inflammation. The expensive oil has long been an important and useful remedy in aromatherapy and natural medicine.
