Clove oil is commonly obtained by steam distillation from the leaves, stems, and buds of the Eugenia caryophyllata tree, native to Indonesia and the Malacca Islands. It is a potent oil with a warm, strong, spicy scent and must be used very diluted and with great care in aromatherapy.

Clove essential oil can be used to heal or relieve acne, bruises, cuts, burns, and leg pain, as well as as a pain reliever for rheumatism and arthritis. It is also said to be good for digestion and help with vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, cramps, and parasitic infestations. It is considered valuable for relieving
from respiratory diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, and tuberculosis. In aromatherapy, this essential oil stimulates the mind and has an aphrodisiac effect. It relieves mental exhaustion and fatigue and promotes sleep in cases of insomnia.

Cloves were widely used in ancient India and China. Ancient Chinese medicine is believed to have used cloves to treat indigestion, diarrhea, hernias, athlete's foot, and fungal infections. In these countries, cloves have been used since ancient times to treat mouth ulcers, toothaches, and as a breath freshener. It was one of the first traded spices. Arab traders are said to have brought cloves to Europe during the Roman Empire.
