Eucalyptus essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aromatic compounds from the eucalyptus tree. It is usually distilled, sometimes pressed, or extracted by solvent extraction. Eucalyptus essential oil is considered antibacterial, disinfectant, and analgesic. It is used to relieve coughs, colds, and other respiratory problems. It relieves muscle and joint pain and aids in the healing of wounds, burns, ulcers, and insect bites. In aromatherapy, eucalyptus is said to promote activity, vitality, and energy.
For breathing difficulties, place a few drops of this oil on a cloth and inhale through the mouth for half a minute, then exhale through the nose. It is applied directly to wounds, rashes, and insect bites. Add a few drops to your bathwater to feel invigorated and refreshed. For relief, soak your aching feet in a bowl of warm water with 4-5 drops of this oil. A few drops of the oil in a diffuser are said to kill germs and bacteria in the air—a good idea for a sick room. Eucalyptus essential oil is for external use only. Always consult a licensed physician when using it as a medicinal product.
Essential oils have played an important role in healing since ancient times in Egypt, China, and other parts of the world. They are considered the oldest form of medicine and cosmetics because they are distilled from plants—without complicated processes or machinery, but still an art. Due to their healing and aromatic properties, they were considered more valuable than gold in ancient times.
