Latin Name: Boswellia Carterii Plant Part Used: ResinSource: Oman Extraction Method: Steam Distillation 5% Dilution in Grapeseed Oil Frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia carterii tree in the Burseraceae family and is also known as olibanum. The word is derived from the French word franc, meaning lush, and along with myrrh, it was the first gum to be used as incense. The tree is native to the Middle East and is said to occur naturally in bonsai formation in this arid land. Frankincense is said to symbolize divinity. This oil is the most popular in aromatherapy for its soothing properties. It is said to help heal wounds and prevent scars. It is used in cosmetic products to firm the face, remove wrinkles, and prevent stretch marks. Frankincense essential oil is used to relieve anxiety, stress, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, and chesty coughs. It is a general uterine tonic, has a calming effect during labor, and helps relieve heavy menstruation. It is most useful during meditation. Avoid during pregnancy. The ancient Egyptians burned frankincense as a sacred incense and used it as a facial mask. They ground the burned resin into a powder called kohl, which is used to highlight the eyes. Kohl-rimmed eyes are commonly seen in Egyptian art. The earliest record of frankincense use was found in a 15th-century BC tomb inscription of the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut. It was used to fumigate the sick and drive away evil spirits.
