Essential Geranium Oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the plant Pelargonium odoratissimum (Apple Geranium). It has an intense scent with a floral aroma and a hint of mint and apple. The main property of this oil is its balancing and uplifting effect. It is used for both the body and mind and relieves
a variety of ailments.
Essential Geranium Oil helps balance oily and dry skin and promotes a balanced mood that relieves stress and anxiety. It is believed to act on the adrenal cortex, which in turn has a balancing effect on the hormonal system. Geranium oil is
used to treat acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, hemorrhoids, ringworm, ulcers, breast swelling, edema, circulatory disorders, sore throat, tonsillitis, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal complaints, stress, and neuralgia. Its strong scent
repels mosquitoes. Add a few drops to shampoo to get rid of headaches.
It was believed that these geraniums kept spirits away (similar to mosquitoes!), and so they were planted as hedges around houses. The plants originally come from South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco and were introduced to Europe in the 17th century. Although there are about 700 varieties of this plant, only ten of them produce essential oil in sufficient quantity. The varieties grown in planted gardens usually produce too little oil for extraction.
