Lemon essential oil has a sharp, fresh scent and is cold-pressed from the peel of fresh lemons. It has a refreshing and concentration-enhancing effect and is therefore often used in air fresheners for offices and banks. It is said to help with rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. It is used to treat skin problems such as abscesses, boils, carbuncles, and acne. It strengthens the immune system and cleanses the body.
In an aroma lamp (a few drops in water), the vapors of lemon oil are used for colds, laryngitis, headaches, and the flu. Smelling the aroma helps with mental health issues such as depression, irritability, stress, listlessness, and fatigue. It lifts the mood and clears the mind. A few drops added to bath water or mixed into a massage oil are said to relieve digestive problems, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, obesity, rheumatism, depression, and stress. It is also used to relieve hangovers.
The lemon originated in India and possibly China and was brought to Europe by the Crusaders in the Middle Ages. Because the fruit is rich in vitamins A, B, and C, sailors were given an ounce of lemon daily to prevent scurvy, eye problems, and other vitamin deficiencies. The first true lemon cultivation in Europe began in Genoa in the mid-15th century. It was later brought to America by Christopher Columbus. Spanish conquests contributed to the further spread of lemon seeds. Lemons were used primarily as ornaments and medicine. It was only much later that they began to be used in cooking.
