Lime essential oil is extracted from Citrus aurantifolia, also known as Mexican or West Indian lime, and from the sour lime. The oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of the unripe fruit or by steam distillation from the peel and/or whole ripe fruit. Lime oil has a sharp citrus scent that instantly lifts the mood and is pale yellow to light olive in color.

Lime oil, used in an aroma lamp, stimulates tired minds and helps with anxiety, apathy, and depression. It is useful for reducing fever in colds, sore throats, and flu. It strengthens the immune system and relieves coughs, bronchitis, sinusitis, and asthma. It is said to help with arthritis, rheumatism, and circulatory problems, as well as obesity and cellulite. The oil is good for the skin; it reduces oiliness and acne and helps with herpes, insect bites, and cuts. However, the oil obtained by cold pressing (as opposed to steam distillation) can cause photosensitivity and irritate the skin.

Limes originate from Asia but are now cultivated in most warm countries, such as Italy, the West Indies, and the Americas. The lime is green when raw and yellow when ripe. Its diameter is typically about five centimeters. It was brought to Europe by the Moors and from there to the Americas. Limes are said to have a lower vitamin C content than lemons. People often took limes on long sea voyages to protect sailors from scurvy caused by vitamin C deficiency.
