Mandarin essential oil is obtained from Citrus Reticulata by cold pressing the peel. In small quantities, mandarin petitgrain oil is also obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. The oil is golden yellow-orange and smells of fresh orange. The mandarins include a whole group of citrus fruits, including Satsuma, Clementine, Dancy, Honey, Pixie, and Tangerines. This oil is very mild and is therefore reportedly even used for treating children and pregnant women; it is one of the few oils used in this way. With its strengthening and regenerating effect on the stomach and liver, it helps with digestive problems. Mandarin oil is also useful for treating acne, oily skin, and pimples. It is also said to help with issues such as water retention and overweight. The oil, diluted to 1–2% in a carrier oil, is gently massaged into the child's abdomen to relieve stomach pain. A few drops in the bath calm hyperactive children. Used in a fragrance lamp, it dispels depression and relieves anxiety. Mandarins are named so because they were traditionally given as gifts to Chinese mandarins. In France, mandarin is considered a safe remedy for digestive disorders in children and the elderly, as it strengthens the digestive system and liver. The mandarin originally comes from southern China and the Far East and was brought to Europe in 1805 and to America in 1845.
