Neroli oil is extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium var. amara), also known as Neroli bigarade, and has a scent similar to bergamot. The flowers are hand-picked and the oil is obtained through water distillation, as the flowers are too delicate for steam distillation. Due to its wonderful fragrance and therapeutic properties, it is one of the most popular essential oils.
Essential Neroli Oil has a very calming effect and is said to relieve chronic anxiety, depression, shock states, and stress. It is also said to alleviate intestinal cramps, colitis, and diarrhea. Thanks to its soothing effect, tapping helps with insomnia, heart palpitations, neuralgia, and dizziness. It is recommended to warm some of it in a fragrance lamp in the convalescent room. On the skin, neroli oil is said to promote the regeneration of skin cells and prevent unsightly scarring, smooth the skin, and combat stretch marks and broken capillaries.
Neroli oil was probably already used by the Romans. In 1680, Anna Maria Orsini, Princess of Nerola, perfumed her gloves and bath with the scent of the bitter orange tree, creating a fashionable new fragrance. From then on, the essential oil was named Neroli after her. Folklore says that these orange blossoms decorated bridal beds to help newlyweds relax in bed. The production of the oil is expensive and requires great care, as the flowers must be picked immediately after blooming.
