Patchouli essential oil is extracted from the Pogostemon cablin plant, a member of the mint family, and has an intense, musky-sweet, spicy scent. The plant is native to Malaysia and India, where it is known as "Puchaput." The word patchouli is derived from the Tamil "pachchaiilai," meaning simply "green leaf." Patchouli oil is extracted from the young leaves, which are dried and fermented before steam distillation. This oil gains in fragrance and potency with age. It is highly valued in skin care, particularly for scar healing.
In Eastern countries, patchouli oil is used in potpourris and scented sachets between linens and clothes to enhance the fragrance and repel bed bugs and insects. The oil is said to have a balancing effect on emotions and create an emotionally charged atmosphere. Used in a fragrance lamp, it relieves anxiety and depression. In bathwater, it is said to help with skin and scalp problems, fungal infections, fluid retention, cellulite, and constipation. It has excellent tissue-repairing properties, accelerates healing, and fights infections. It is helpful for acne, eczema, weeping wounds, ulcers, and athlete's foot.
It appears that patchouli was placed between Indian cashmere shawls before they were sent to Victorian England to protect the goods from moths. Without the characteristic scent of dried patchouli leaves, the shawls could not be sold in England. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and incense enjoyed great popularity among hippies in the 1960s and 70s, as the patchouli scent masked body odor and the smell of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was used as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks. In many Asian countries, patchouli is also used as an antidote for snakebites.
