Amyris essential oil is also called West Indian sandalwood oil because of its sandalwood-like scent. It is extracted by steam distillation from the bark and twigs of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its high oil content, this wood burns naturally like a candle, and is therefore called candlewood by the local population. It is a more cost-effective alternative to pure sandalwood.

This oil has been used to cleanse wounds and treat flu and diarrhea. It is said to be very effective for cystitis and vaginal infections. Used in a vaporizer, it relieves anxiety and tension, as well as insomnia, and acts as an aphrodisiac for impotence and frigidity. It is used to treat coughs, colds, and bronchitis. Its calming properties are said to aid meditation. It also has muscle relaxant and emollient properties.

The botanical origin of the tree from which this oil is extracted was unknown until 1886, when microscopic examination of the leaves revealed the main differences between this plant and true sandalwood. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. Due to their healing and aromatic properties, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by ancient people.
