The essential Amyris oil is also called West Indian Sandalwood Oil because its scent resembles sandalwood. It is obtained by steam distillation from the bark and branches of the Amyris balsamifera tree. Due to its high oil content, this wood burns like a candle on its own and is therefore called candlewood by the native population. It is a more affordable alternative to pure sandalwood.
This oil was used for wound cleansing as well as for treating flu and diarrhea. It is said to be very effective for bladder infections and vaginal infections. When used in a diffuser, it relieves anxiety and tension as well as insomnia and acts as an aphrodisiac for impotence and frigidity. It is used to treat coughs, colds, and bronchitis. Its calming properties are said to aid meditation. It also acts as a muscle relaxant and softener.
The botanical origin of the tree from which this oil is obtained was unknown until 1886, when microscopic examination of the leaves revealed the main differences between this plant and true sandalwood. The Amyris balsamifera tree grows wild in Haiti. Due to their healing and aromatic properties, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold by the people of antiquity.
