The leaves of this tree were apparently once processed into tea, hence the name. Tea tree essential oil is the concentrated liquid steam distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is believed to have valuable antiseptic and antifungal properties due to its terpenoids, and it is now used in many personal care products and medicines.
Tea tree essential oil is said to help with nasal congestion, colds, coughs, and flu. It is used to treat acne, yeast infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, and athlete's foot, and is said to relieve muscle pain and joint injuries. As a bath additive, it helps fight bacteria. Tea tree oil is not suitable for internal use. It is only commonly used in adults and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
The tea tree has been known for its medicinal properties since ancient times in eastern Australia. Aboriginal Australians have used the crushed leaves for centuries to heal cuts, burns, wounds, and infections. They inhaled the oils from the crushed leaves to relieve coughs and colds. They applied the oil to wounds and applied a poultice. They infused the leaves and made tea from them to relieve sore throats. Between the 1920s and 1930s, people in Europe began to promote and use the essential oil of this tree for its antimicrobial properties.
