In the past, the leaves of this tree were apparently processed into tea, hence the name. Essential tea tree oil is the concentrated liquid obtained by steam distillation from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is attributed valuable antiseptic and antifungal properties due to its terpenoids and is now used in many body care products and medicines.

Essential tea tree oil is said to help with nasal congestion, colds, coughs, and flu. It is used to treat acne, fungal infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, and athlete's foot and is said to relieve muscle pain and joint injuries. As a bath additive, it helps fight bacteria. Tea tree oil is not suitable for internal use. It is usually used only in adults and must be kept away from children and pets. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The tea tree has been known since ancient times in eastern Australia for its medicinal properties. The Australian Aboriginal people have used the crushed leaves for centuries to heal cuts, burns, wounds, and infections. They inhaled the oils of the crushed leaves to relieve coughs and colds. They dripped the oil on wounds and applied a compress. They brewed the leaves to make tea to soothe sore throats. Between 1920 and 1930, people in Europe began to make the essential oil of this tree known and used it because of its antimicrobial properties.
