Ylang Ylang is a large tree native to Far Eastern countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers have a strong fragrance and long, hanging petals. The essential oil obtained from it is available in large quantities and is therefore particularly affordable. However, it is highly valued in the perfume and cosmetics industry for its scent and is now also used in the food industry.
According to science, essential Ylang Ylang oil has a mentally stimulating effect. In aromatherapy, however, it is considered one of the best oils for relaxing body and mind. The mere scent is said to lower blood pressure. A bath with the oil or its use in massage oil naturally enhances the relaxation experience. It is used to relieve stress, depression, shock states, and anxiety. As a hair tonic, it is said to balance sebum production. However, note: high concentrations of Ylang Ylang can cause headaches and nausea.
Ylang Ylang means "flower of flowers" in Malay and was traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and relaxing fragrance. Therefore, the flowers of this tree were scattered on the bridal bed of newlyweds in Indonesia. Muslim women burned this oil to perfume their harem, the part of the palace reserved for women. In China, the scent was used to cleanse the walls of the mandarin’s residence. Essential Ylang Ylang oil has long been associated with perfume and relaxation.
