Ylang ylang is a large tree native to Far Eastern countries such as Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers are strongly fragrant and have long, drooping petals. The essential oil extracted from them is readily available and therefore particularly inexpensive. However, its fragrance is highly valued in the perfume and cosmetics industries and is now also used in the food industry.

According to science, ylang-ylang essential oil has a mentally stimulating effect. However, in aromatherapy, it is considered one of the best oils for relaxing the body and mind. The mere smell is said to lower blood pressure. Taking a bath with the oil or using it in a massage oil naturally enhances the relaxation experience. It is used to relieve stress, depression, shock, and anxiety. As a hair tonic, it is said to balance sebum production. However, be aware that high concentrations of ylang-ylang can cause headaches and nausea.

Ylang-ylang means "flower of flowers" in Malay and was traditionally considered an aphrodisiac and relaxing scent. Therefore, in Indonesia, the blossoms of this tree were sprinkled on the marital beds of newlyweds. Muslim women burned this oil to perfume their harem, the part of the palace reserved for women. In China, the scent was used to purify the walls of the mandarin orange tree. Ylang-ylang essential oil has long been associated with perfume and relaxation.
