Latin name: Citrus Bergamia. Plant part used: Fruit peel. Origin: Mediterranean region. Extraction method: Cold pressing. Essential bergamot oil is obtained by pressing the ripe and unripe fruits of the bergamot tree. This essential oil, which smells lemony yet sweet, provides a relaxed and happy feeling. It helps with urinary tract infections and skin problems and strengthens the functions of the liver, spleen, and stomach. Organic essential bergamot oil is used in aromatherapy to treat depression, stress, tension, low self-confidence, anxiety, and hysteria. It also helps with skin infections such as general wounds, psoriasis, cold sores, and eczema. This oil is said to help patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), food cravings, postnatal depression, colds, and flu. Bergamot oil is a popular remedy in aromatherapy and is used in diffusers, massages, and as a bath additive. Experts advise caution when applying this oil to sensitive skin if it is exposed to sunlight afterward, as this can cause burns. Avoid the sun if this oil has been applied to the skin. The name bergamot derives from the city of Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the oil was first sold. Bergamot has been cultivated since the 16th century in Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece. It has long been used in the perfume and food industries (e.g., Earl Grey tea). While the extraction of essential oils only began recently, the fruits, their essence, and their flavor have been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years.
