Latin name: Salvia sclarea. Plant part used: Tops and leaves. Origin: Hungary. Extraction method: Steam distillation. Organic clary sage essential oil is obtained by steam distillation from the flowering tops and leaves of Salvia sclarea. The plant is native to southern Europe and is cultivated in France and Russia for its oil. The main benefit of this oil is its calming effect on the nerves, making it particularly helpful for women's aches and pains. It is also said to help with skin problems such as acne, boils, and ulcers, and to relieve muscle and joint pain. Clary sage is helpful for depression, stress, and insomnia. It is used for women's complaints such as painful periods, irregular menstruation, and during labor. During menopause, this oil is said to relieve hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, irritability, headaches, and dizziness. It is used as an aphrodisiac. It is also good for digestion and the kidneys. Clary sage oil should be avoided with alcohol consumption, as it can increase the intoxicating effects. Use it in small amounts, as large doses can cause headaches. In the Middle Ages, clary sage was known as Oculus Christi, meaning "the Eye of Christ." Since then, it has been a highly valued medicinal herb. In Jamaica, it was used by the native population to cleanse and cool ulcers, as well as for eye inflammation. It is an expensive oil and has long been an important and useful agent in aromatherapy and natural medicine.
