Latin name: Pelargonium graveolens. Plant part used: Leaves, stems, and flowers. Origin: South Africa. Extraction method: Steam distillation. Organic geranium essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and stems of the Pelargonium odoratissimum (apple geranium) plant. It has a strong odor with a floral aroma and hints of mint and apple. The main property of this oil is its balancing and uplifting effect. It is used to calm both body and mind and relieve a variety of ailments. Geranium essential oil helps balance oily and dry skin and also balances the mind, reducing stress and anxiety. It is said to act on the adrenal cortex, which has a balancing effect on the hormonal system. Geranium oil is used to treat acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, hemorrhoids, ringworm, ulcers, breast swelling, edema, poor circulation, sore throat, tonsillitis, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal symptoms, stress, and neuralgia. Its strong scent repels mosquitoes. Add a few drops to shampoo to get rid of head lice. These geraniums were believed to keep ghosts away (just as they did mosquitoes!), and were therefore planted as hedges around houses. The plants are native to South Africa, Réunion, Madagascar, Egypt, and Morocco and were introduced to European countries in the 17th century. Although there are approximately 700 varieties of this plant, only 10 produce essential oil in usable quantities. The varieties planted in gardens usually produce too little oil to be used for extraction.
