Latin Name: Citrus Limon Plant Part Used: Fruit Peel Origin: Italy Extraction Method: Cold Pressing The organic essential lemon oil has a sharp, fresh scent and is obtained by cold pressing the fresh lemon peel. This oil refreshes the mind and promotes concentration, which is why it is often used in air fresheners for offices and banks. It is said to help with rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. It has been used to treat skin problems such as abscesses, boils, carbuncles, and acne. It strengthens the immune system and cleanses the body. When used in a fragrance lamp (a few drops in water), the vapors of the lemon oil are used for colds, laryngitis, headaches, and flu. Smelling the aroma is helpful for mental issues such as depression, irritability, stress, lethargy, and fatigue. It lifts the mood and clears the mind. Adding a few drops to bath water or mixing into massage oil is said to relieve digestive problems, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, overweight, rheumatism, depression, and stress. It is also used to get rid of hangovers. The lemon originally comes from India and possibly also from China and was brought to Europe in the Middle Ages by the Crusaders. Since the fruits are rich in vitamins A, B, and C, sailors were given one ounce of lemon juice daily to prevent scurvy, eye problems, and other vitamin deficiencies. The first proper lemon cultivation in Europe began in the mid-15th century in Genoa. Later, it was introduced to America by Christopher Columbus. Through the Spanish conquests, lemon seeds spread further. Lemon was mainly used as an ornament and medicine. Only much later did people begin to use it for cooking.
