Latin Name: Pogostemon Cablin Plant Part Used: Dried Leaves Source: India Extraction Method: Steam Distillation Patchouli Organic Essential Oil is extracted from the Pogostemon Cablin plant of the mint family and has a rich, musky-sweet, spicy scent. Native to Malaysia and India, the plant is known there as "Puchaput." The word patchouli is derived from the Tamil "pachchaiilai," which simply means "green leaf." Patchouli oil is extracted from the young leaves, which are dried and fermented before steam distillation. This oil improves its fragrance and potency with age. It is highly prized in skin care, especially for scar healing. In Eastern countries, patchouli oil is used in potpourris and sachets placed between linens and clothing to diffuse the fragrance and repel bed bugs and insects. The oil is said to have a balancing effect on the emotions and create an amorous atmosphere. When used in an oil burner, it relieves anxiety and depression. It is believed to help with skin and scalp complaints, fungal infections, and fluid retention, as well as reducing cellulite and relieving constipation. It has excellent tissue-repairing properties, accelerating healing and fighting infections. Thus, it helps with acne, eczema, weeping wounds, ulcers, and athlete's foot. Patchouli appears to have been placed between Indian cashmere shawls before shipping to Victorian England to protect the goods from moths. Without the characteristic scent of dried patchouli leaves, the shawls could not be sold in England. In Europe and America, patchouli oil and frankincense were extremely popular among hippies in the 1960s and 70s, as the scent of patchouli masked body odor and the smell of burnt cannabis. Patchouli was used as a hair conditioner for dreadlocks. In many Asian countries, patchouli is also used as an antidote for snake bites.
