Latin name: Melaleuca Alternifolia. Plant part used: Leaves, twigs. Source: Australia. Extraction method: Steam distillation. In ancient times, the leaves of this tree appear to have been infused to make tea, hence the name. Tea tree essential oil is the concentrated liquid compound steam-distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is believed to have valuable antiseptic and antifungal properties due to compounds called terpenoids, and is now used in many personal care products and medicines. Organic Tea Tree Essential Oil is said to be beneficial for constipation, colds, coughs, and flu. It is used to treat acne, fungal infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, and athlete's foot, and is said to relieve sore muscles and joint injuries. When added to bathwater, it helps fight bacteria. Tea tree oil should not be taken internally. It is typically only used by adults and should be kept away from children and pets. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The tea tree has been known for its medicinal properties in eastern Australia since ancient times. Aboriginal Australians have been known to use the crushed leaves for hundreds of years to heal cuts, burns, wounds, and infections. They inhaled the oils from the crushed leaves to relieve coughs and colds. They sprinkled this oil on wounds and applied a poultice. They poured over the leaves and made tea to soothe sore throats. Between 1920 and 1930, the essential oil of this tree became known in Europe and used for its antimicrobial properties.
