Latin name: Melaleuca alternifolia. Plant part used: leaves, twigs. Source: Australia. Extraction method: steam distillation. In earlier times, it seems that the leaves of this tree were brewed to make tea, which is how the name originated. Essential tea tree oil is the concentrated liquid compound distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, native to the northeast coast of New South Wales, Australia. The oil is attributed valuable antiseptic and antifungal properties due to so-called terpenoids and is now used in many body care products and medicines. Organic tea tree essential oil is said to be effective against constipation, colds, coughs, and flu. It is used to treat acne, fungal infections, dandruff, vaginal infections, hemorrhoids, and athlete's foot and is said to relieve muscle soreness and joint injuries. When added to bath water, it helps fight bacteria. Tea tree oil must not be taken internally. It is usually only applied to adults and must be kept away from children and pets. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The tea tree has been known in eastern Australia since ancient times for its medicinal properties. It is known that the Australian Aboriginal people have used the crushed leaves for hundreds of years to heal cuts, burns, wounds, and infections. They inhaled the oils of the crushed leaves to relieve coughs and colds. They sprinkled this oil on wounds and applied a compress. They brewed the leaves to make tea to soothe sore throats. Between 1920 and 1930, the essential oil of this tree became known in Europe and was used for its antimicrobial properties.
